CITY BIO: Charleston, S.C, is feeling the love. Recently named the “second best city in the world” by Travel + Leisure, and the “#1 city in the United States” by Conde Nast Traveler, Charleston is best described by Ruthie Ravenel as “a big city that ‘lives’ like a small town.” It’s no wonder the accolades keep coming for this charming and historic coastal city. Beloved for its southern hospitality and culinary delights, Charleston is also ranked one of the “10 fastest growing cities for software and Internet technologies.” We asked Ruthie for her insider expertise, and she kindly shared with us her A-LIST picks for favorite hotel, restaurant, and attraction:

“Centrally located and extremely well appointed, the Planters Inn offers great service, a fabulous restaurant and bar, and one of the best courtyards in all of Charleston. The location cannot be beat at the corner of Market and Meeting Streets, the rooms are nicely decorated in a traditional Southern Style, and the hotel concierge is ready to cater to any need. The Planters Inn is the only member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux hotel group in all of South Carolina.”

“One of the best kept secrets in Charleston’s dining scene, Fulton Five offers a modern and upscale take on traditional Italian cuisine in a romantic and unique small dining room setting. Any day of the week the restaurant is full of locals and visitors enjoying the gourmet food and extensive wine list. A bit hard to find – but well worth the search, Fulton Five is located off lower King Street at #5 Fulton Street.”

“Charleston is a city best seen by foot, and whether it is self guided or a professionally led tour, the historic architecture, peaceful streetscapes and nature will astound you throughout Charleston. Take a stroll in the South of Broad and Ansonborough neighborhoods for the most impressive real estate, including museum houses and some lovely boutique Inns and B&Bs. Stop in at Goat Sheep Cow on Church Street for a unique French style baguette sandwich (made fresh daily) and some artisan cheeses to have a picnic at White Point Gardens. This lovely park at the end of the Peninsula overlooks Charleston Harbor, and centuries old oak trees shade the benches and sidewalks where replica battlements and cannon still stand on display.”

Have you been looking for one of Charleston’s unique Kitchen or Carriage Houses? These quintessential small masonry residences have history and charm to spare. This 1845 Kitchen House has 2BRs and 2 baths in 1,969 sq. ft. The first floor has a very large living room/dining room, guest suite and a very sunny kitchen with a mahogany study off the kitchen that overlooks the rear garden. There is also a sunny side patio off the east side of the kitchen. The current owner totally renovated the property and redid the plumbing, electrical (including cat-5 wiring) and HVAC. The kitchen has lots of built-in storage and top of the line appliances. Upstairs, there is a master suite with sitting area, wet bar, large walk-in closet, washer/dryer and a large master bath. So many people want this type of residence; but, there are just not that many, especially ones that are so well renovated with lots of windows all around, parking and well designed private outdoor spaces. This property has been featured in Charleston Home Magazine as one of the “Before and After” winners.
